How sensitive posts and spaces appear has changed
We refined how content is categorized and shown so we can respect both people who want to see or post sensitive expression and people who prefer not to see it.
Prohibited content—such as genital exposure or depictions of sexual acts—still cannot be posted, regardless of visibility settings. On top of that, you can more clearly choose who content reaches and how care-needed labels are applied.
Why we made this change
Until then, there was no opt-out for people who preferred not to see sensitive content, so care-needed posts could still mix into home and search. Moderation could feel stricter as a way to avoid surprise exposure, which also made posting harder.
This time, we added a way for people who prefer not to see sensitive content to turn viewing off in account settings, and a way for people who want to see it to receive and view it.
If you prefer not to see sensitive content
At the time of this release, “Allow sensitive content” in account settings is on by default (sensitive posts can reach you). If you prefer not to see them, turn viewing off in account settings.
When it is off, sensitive posts and spaces marked as including sensitive content no longer appear in lists such as search and recommendations.
Posts from people you already followed or spaces you bookmarked may still appear in feeds and similar surfaces with images and videos blurred (unfollow or remove bookmarks if you want them to stop).
If you want to view or post sensitive content
At the time of this release, account viewing permission is on by default. Without an extra step, sensitive posts and spaces are already included in home and search (images and videos still start blurred, as before). When searching posts, users, or communities, you can choose to include / exclude / show only sensitive results.
Post-level sensitive setting
When a post needs care, mark it sensitive on that post, as before. That makes it harder to reach people who opted out and labels it for people who want to see it.
Space-level sensitive designation
Users or community space owners who want to deliver sensitive content more actively can self-declare the space as including sensitive content in profile settings. Effects include:
- Posts in that space are treated as sensitive, so you do not need to mark each post as sensitive
- Spaces become easier to discover in search and similar surfaces for people who want to view sensitive content (you can identify them with badges and related cues)
